Let’s Talk Dirty… Surprising Cleaning Tips

We Love Dawn

Non-Toxic Lubricant

Apply Dawn dish soap to sliding glass doors, door knobs, hinges etc. It lasts much longer than any aerosol type spray that I have tried, and it’s non-toxic. It does a great job of cleaning the parts that it’s lubricating as well!

De-Grease Your Tools

After you have finished your automotive repair project, soak your dirty tools in Dawn soap before you put them away to remove all the oil and grime. This also helps prevent rust from forming on the tools.

Painting Clean-up

Protect yourself before a painting project: Rub soap on exposed skin and let dry. Paint will easily wash right off when it’s time to clean up.

Wash paintbrushes: Soak brushes in warm water and soap for 20 minutes, then rinse them out.

Multi-Purpose Cleaner

Use a drop of Dawn soap in 8 ounces water to clean ceramic tile and no-wax/linoleum floors. You can also use the spray on:

  • Bathroom and kitchen counters and sinks
  • Woodwork, like baseboards, shelves, and wainscoting (Make sure to dry as you go; wood doesn’t like prolonged contact with water.)
  • Tubs and toilet seats.

Sidewalk De-Icer

For icy steps and sidewalks in freezing temperatures, mix 1 teaspoon of Dawn dish soap, 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, and 1/2 gallon hot/warm water and pour over walkways. They won’t refreeze. No more salt eating at the concrete in your sidewalks!

Unclogging Toilets

Clear out a clogged toilet by pouring a cup or so of Dawn dish soap into the toilet bowl, and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Follow with a bucket of hot water poured from waist height, and your toilet should be clog-free!

Keep Insects Out

Stop insects from coming in your house: Generously rub or brush soap along the edge of your doors and windows. The insects will get stuck in the soap, preventing them from coming indoors.

Sparkling Windows

Mix 3 drops Dawn dish soap in 1 gallon of water and fill a spray bottle with the solution. Spray and wipe as you would with any window cleaner.

Claudette’s Cleaning Tips

Clean & Deodorize Your Microwave

Fill a coffee cup with water and your favorite (nice smelling) household cleaner or vinegar. Put in microwave and heat until water boils. Let sit with door closed for 10 minutes. Steam will loosen stuck-on food; microwave will easily wipe clean… and smell fresh

Use Car Wax as Stovetop Polish

Love to cook, hate to clean the stovetop?
Preserve a pristine stovetop by applying a thin layer of car wax, then wiping it off. Future spills will lift off easily.

Make Mold & Mildew Disappear on Bathroom Tile Grout

Make a paste of baking soda and chlorine bleach, thick enough so it won’t run, apply to grout.

Let sit 10-15 minutes and simply rinse off.Be sure to wear old clothes!!

Coffee Filter as Screen Cleaner

For lint-free viewing, grab a coffee filter to wipe down dusty and static-ky computer monitors and TV screens regularly.

Rubber Gloves as Pet Hair Remover

Put on a damp rubber dishwashing glove and run your hand over hair-covered upholstery – the hair will cling to the glove, not the sofa.

Rinse off the glove in the sink (with the drain catcher in place, of course).
